one of the seven original liberal arts, has been an integral part of the
Wells curriculum since the college was founded. In this rich and rewarding
educational tradition, all of our students can participate fully in the
offerings of our music program. Drawing on the musical exposure, experience
and training gained at Wells, hundreds of my former students - while pursuing
an infinite variety of careers - still enjoy the personal satisfaction
of accomplished involvement in music. That's truly a worthy outcome of
a liberal arts education."

Bringing students of widely varying backgrounds and abilities together to experience and share the joy of choral singing is central to Professor Thoburn's life as a teacher. Under his direction, choral groups from Wells have won international awards in juried competition, performed by invitation at national professional music conferences, toured in the U.S. and Europe, performed with ensembles from other colleges, and sung with professional orchestras. In addition, more than 100 of his choral compositions, arrangements, and editions have been published. Choral groups across the U.S. and throughout the world have sung his music, with performances recently heard in Canada, England, Germany, France, South Africa, India, and Taiwan. Long dedicated to the Wells community, Professor Thoburn has often represented the faculty on the Board of Trustees, served on countless committees, and chaired the Music Department, Division of the Arts, Centennial Committee, New Arts Facilities Committee, Summer College Program, and Advisory Committee on Faculty Personnel. “A Christmas Triptych,” original compositions setting three 15th C. English texts for a cappella SATB, published by Mark Foster Music - Shawnee Press, 2003; recorded by Voices of Toronto in 2005. “My Dancing Day,” accompanied SATB arrangement of traditional carol, published by Coronet - Theodore Presser, 1990; recorded by Madrigalia of Rochester in 2003. “A Lovely Rose is All My Song,” original composition setting a medieval poem for mixed unaccompanied voices, published by Carl Fischer, 1988; recorded by Madrigalia in 2000.
