"A ‘sociological imagination’ leads people to see the world around them in new and exciting ways and makes it clear that existing social arrangements are not inevitable or the only ones possible. I think students pursue the study of sociology because they enjoy the knowledge they gain about their society and because what they learn is relevant to many different careers. "

Leslie Miller-Bernal

Professor Miller-Bernal’s particular interest in teaching and research are centered on women’s higher education, with special attention paid to single-gender versus coeducational learning. She studies the history and present condition of historically black colleges, as well as women’s status in India and several African societies. She enjoys the small classes she teaches at Wells, the opportunity to really get to know her students, and years of continuing relationships she holds with alums.
