    October, 2007

    On September 29, 2007, JOMARIE ALANO presented a paper entitled, "Culture, Politics, and Resistance: The Love Letters of Ada and Piero Gobetti, 1918-1926" at the New York State Association of European Historians. The conference was held at Niagara University. The paper represents a selection from the biography she is writing about Italian Resistance activist Ada Gobetti.

    Professor of Religion Emeritus ARTHUR BELLINZONI has signed a contract with Prometheus Books for the publication of his new book An Introduction to Biblical Scholarship: The Old Testament.

    BRUCE BENNETT had poems published in The Healing Muse. He read at the reading to celebrate the publication of Issue 7 of The Healing Muse at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse on October 10.

    MARISA DESANTIS just completed writing the student companion CD-Rom for the third edition of the introductory Spanish text Plazas: Lugar de encuentros, published by Thomson-Heinle Higher Learning.

    WILLIAM GANIS, had his review of Ruth Allen's "Symbiosis" exhibition at Chappell Gallery, New York City, published in the Fall 2007 issue of "Glass Quarterly." On September 8, Professor Ganis traveled with his WLLS 101 class to the Corning Museum of Glass where they met with Elizabeth Duane, Deputy Director, Marketing Communications and Sales, to discuss the museum's branding strategies. On September 22 this same class toured the Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute where they visited with Mary Murray, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, and received a behind-the-scenes preview of the "Auspicious Vision" exhibition.

    DEBORAH GAGNON was recently elected to a five-year term on the Board of Trustees of the South Central Regional Library Council. SCRLC's mission affirms that equal opportunity to participate in our country's economic, political, and social life depends upon equal access to information and that libraries and library systems are the most appropriate means for ensuring this access. SCRLC serves libraries in the region by encouraging collaboration and resource sharing, leading and challenging libraries to superior service, and advocating for libraries within society. SCRLC's catchment area is the geographic region from Lake Ontario in the north to the Pennsylvania border in the south, from Alfred in the west to Oneonta in the east. Wells College is a member institution of the Council.

    JEANNE GODDARD co-directed and performed in Opera Cowpokes Alive! performances in June 2007, in Cortland, New York, and at the CRS Barn Studio in Lansing. She also contributed minuet choreography for the Women's Work production of Pauline Viardot's "Cendrillon" at the Community School of Music and Art. Professor Goddard choreographed and performed a new solo, "Study in Red/Study in Blue" for the Ithaca Contemporary Choreography Choreographer's Showcase, also at the Community School of Music and Art. In July she performed with Ithaca community members and Cornell University faculty in the multimedia event,  "Walk a Minute in My Loveshoe," directed and produced by Jim Self at Cornell University's Kiplinger Theatre. In addition, she taught four weeks of modern dance technique classes at the CRS Barn Studio.

    CHRISTINE IACOBUCCI, as part of her involvement in the Creating a Safe School task force at Lansing Central School, has been invited to attend a conference in Erie, Pennsylvania, on October 17-19, hosted by The Ophelia Project called, "It's Not Kids Being Kids. It Has a Name: Relational Aggression." (http://www.opheliaproject.org/main/ithasaname/ithasanamemain.html) Sarah Ferguson, The Duchess of York, is the guest speaker on October 18.

    http://wwwopheliaproject.org/main/calendar_duchess.htm Professor Iacobucci’s attendance is being paid for with a grant from The Triad Foundation; she is representing Wells as well as the CASS Task Force while she’s there.

    TUKUMBI LUMUMBA-KASONGO attended the "Northeastern Annual Conference of Pre-Law Advisors" held in Philadelphia, June 2007. He also attended the United Nations Development Programme-Africa Region's "Meeting of the Experts on the First Sub-Saharan Human Development Report," Dakar, Senegal, June 2007. In July 2007, Professor Lumumba-Kasongo attended a conference organized by the International Political Science Association  (IPSA) Research Committee on the theme of "Socialism, Capitalism, and Democracy" and hosted by the American Graduate School of International Relations and Diplomacy (AGSIRD) in Paris, France; he presented a paper entitled, "Toward a Critical Understanding of the Practices and Values of Liberal Democracy in Africa with a Particular Attention to the Third or the Fourth Term Presidential Phenomenon." Also in July, he attended the "Second European Conference on African Studies" organized by the African Studies Center in Leiden, the Netherlands. In October 2007, he attended the second meeting of the United Nations Development Programme-Africa Region on "Human Development Report," Nairobi, Kenya.

    LESLIE MILLER-BERNAL's article, "Men's Colleges and Universities," was included in a new encyclopedia, Gender and Education, edited by Barbara J. Bank (Praeger, 2007).
